Job Description

The Lead Data Engineer role will mentor, teach and ensure that data pipelines and processing are scalable, repeatable, and secure, and can support multiple applications and users.  They help facilitate retrieving data from a variety of sources, transforming into the required formats, and ensure data quality needs are met.  Timely access to data is paramount, so ensuring the infrastructure and analytics are scalable and performant is a primary concern. 

This role usually functions as a core member of an agile team, at the intersection of enterprise services, analytics and our data platform. These professionals are responsible for the care and growth of the infrastructure and solutions that provide insight from our data platform and other sources. They enable and develop big data and batch/real-time analytical solutions that leverage emerging technologies.

Additional responsibilities include understanding healthcare business requirements, developing distributed solutions as well as tools, automation and telemetry on the health and performance of analytics solutions and the data platform. They understand how to apply technologies to solve big data problems and to develop innovative big data solutions. These professionals have knowledge of data analysis, end user and business requirements analysis to understand and incorporate the business needs into technical solutions. A solid understanding of database design principles, query and system development life cycle are important. These individuals must work well in a team environment, with both technical and business analyst roles.


  • Design, Coding, Testing, Documentation in the areas of Development and Maintenance
  • Ownership of assigned software and non-software deliverables
  • Liaison with Business Analysts and/or internal / external customers to ensure that requirements are understood
  • Production of accurate, unambiguous technical design specifications to the required level of detail in the timescales as defined by the PM
  • Production, preparation and execution of unit test plans
  • Production of efficient and fully documented code
  • Production of supporting technical and installation documentation for internal and external publication
  • Achievement of agreed productivity targets in order to ensure developments are delivered within budget, to schedule and to defined quality standards
  • Completion of all necessary software and non-software components in the timelines as defined by the Project Manager
  • Works with little supervision from project or line manager


  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering or other relevant combination of training and education
  • 2 plus years of technical experience in software development.
  • Expertise with Python, Java and/or Scala
  • Expertise with NoSQL Datastores Hadoop
  • Experience with SQL languages (T-SQL)
  • Expertise with JSON/Restful-based web service design and development
  • Experience with information technology data standards including JSON, XML, XML Schema
  • Experience with Spark or other distributed analytics frameworks.
  • Understanding of cloud-based SaaS architectures – involves designing elastic solutions, distributed processing, availability, scalability…etc.
  • Experience with full lifecycle development and using Agile methods.
  • Excellent analytical, design and troubleshooting skills and server side debugging skills.
  • Excellent research and analysis skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated and tenacious when tackling tough technical issues.
  • Ability to work closely within a team and collaborate with others.
  • Ability to handle conflict, difficult situations, and urgent issues in a professional manner.


  • Experience with multi-tenant SaaS based solutions a plus.        
  • Experience with healthcare systems and technology a plus: Care Management, EDI, HL7, HIE, IHE, CCD
  • Experience in working with a distributed team
  • Experience with Enterprise Search (solr, elastic search)
  • Experience with ETL Tools (SSIS, Pentaho, Sqoop)
